Last week a prominent casino owner in Pennsylvania was charged with perjury in conjunction with lying to gambling regulators in the state to gain a slot machine license.
Several Republican lawmakers have decided that it is time to change the current laws regarding how these background checks are conducted.
House Minority Leader Sam Smith has asked that legislation is passed to allow for the Attorney Generals office to have an increased role in conducting the checks. He claims that by allowing the Attorney’s office to take part in the checks, applicants would have to reveal more than is currently required by the state Gaming Control Boards.
“We all recognize that we have a problem and we don’t need to be sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that it doesn’t exist,” said Smith.
Louis DeNaples is the casino operator that was charged last week with perjury. The charges are stemming from him not revealing his ties to the mob in his talks with the Pennsylvania State Gaming Control Board. The license of Mount Airy Casino Resort has been suspended.

Other countries and cities within those countries are catching on much quicker than the United States. It is much better for society to have regulated gambling, rather than illegal gambling.
Pasig City, located in the Philippines, has moved to a regulated form of gambling. They have passed laws to ensure that anyone running a gambling establishment, adheres to the regulatory guidelines.
The laws that have been put in place cover off-track betting, card games, Internet gaming centers, jai alai, bingo, lotto, and casino gambling. Basically, anything approved by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. is now regulated.
In order to get permits from City Hall for gambling, they must have an accreditation from Pagcor. They must receive the permits from the mayor in order to run a legal gambling operation.
Part of the new law also includes where these gambling establishments can be located. They must not be within a 200-m radius of any government building, church, educational institutions, or hospital.
The rest of the world is figuring out what U.S. lawmakers are blind to. Regulating different forms of gambling is a better, and safer, alternative than allowing the illegal gambling that is currently taking place. If regulated, gambling can become a productive asset for societies in the nation.
In the Philippines, Pasig City is now finding that out.
